Discussions on improving safety at the Tay Road Bridge have now taken place, bringing together bridge officials and local representatives after the loss of 17‑year‑old Phoenix Birkett in April.
Phoenix’s mum, Lisa Tarling, has been calling for meaningful change since her son’s death, determined that no other family should face the same heartbreak. She welcomed news that senior figures had met to examine what more could be done.
The meeting was arranged after Willie Rennie MSP spoke directly with Lisa about her concerns and her determination to see improvements. He, along with Wendy Chamberlain MP, met with the Tay Bridge Board in Dundee to discuss current safety measures and the challenges involved in strengthening them.
Lisa said she was grateful to see the issue taken seriously:
“Knowing that people are listening and taking steps to look at the safety of the bridge means so much to me. I live every day with a loss no family should ever have to endure. If changes can prevent even one other family from suffering what we have, that would mean everything.”
Bridge officials expressed their condolences and outlined the complexities involved in altering a 60‑year‑old structure exposed to severe weather and designed with specific engineering constraints. They explained that while adding higher physical barriers is not currently feasible, the bridge is monitored constantly through CCTV, tracking software, and crisis‑support signage.
Willie Rennie MSP emphasised that the discussions were detailed and sensitive, acknowledging both the limitations and the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable people. He confirmed he will meet privately with Lisa to update her and to discuss how Phoenix’s memory can be honoured through continued work on this issue.
Lisa remains committed to pushing for improvements and is thankful to those who have stepped forward to help bring Phoenix’s story to the forefront.
